Much needed boost By Jacob Page Blenheim’s new MRI scanner has been hailed as a must have item that has seen waiting times drop since it began operation in June, Nelson Marlborough District Health Board chief executive Chris Fleming says. The $2.5 million machine which was two years in the making was officially opened on Monday night in an event organised by Pacific Radiology Group and the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board who will share the use of the machine.

He says it took five hours to do a scan of the human body, today it takes 30-40 minutes for exemplary images. “It has become an indispensable aide for clinical practice… It’s not just a luxury item. “Back when we had our second hand scanner it was considered a luxury item but now you cannot practice proper healthcare without this ma-
chine and it’s testament to the hard work of everyone involved that we can open it formally. ‘It puts us at the cutting edge of healthcare and allows us to offer exactly what our patients expect,” Rick says. Chris says it had been a long journey but well worth it with the right public-private balance. “A population of this size simply would not support a fully public MRI and it probably wouldn’t have enough demand for a private MRI but together we have a demand for both.
“The waiting time across our region has been going up but I’ve just looked at the figures for July and those times are going down and I expect that trend to continue,” Chris says. It is believed the scanner will not have to be replaced for at least 15 years. Strong turnout for half-marathon By Adam Poulopoulos Finishers were up about 100 from last year despite changeable conditions at Sunday’s Woodbourne Half-Marathon. The event saw about 430 finishers cross the line
over the three grades, with 112 completing the half-marathon. The figure was about 100 up on last year’s total. Organiser Lindsay Norriss says runners seemed to enjoy the run despite the weather.
It rained during the start of the run before clearing up. He says next year’s event will take place on August 21. More photos on page 14.

Seddon water project gets $1 million boost
By Jacob Page The $1 million subsidy from the Government to help finance clean drinking water for Seddon is being seen as a project defining cash injection. Marlborough District Council assets and services manager Mark Wheeler says the funding should ensure the project remains affordable. He says the budget that council has approved, and the Seddon community has bought into, would deliver drinkable water at an annual charge of no more than $240 per household or $4.62 a week. “We’re confident we can achieve that with the million dollar subsidy,” he says. Mark says work can now move to the next phase; finalising the land that will be required and the parameters for a design-and-build tender. “There are likely to be several design options put forward for water
treatment. “Some minimum standards and specifications will be stipulated but I’d expect the private sector to come up with some interesting and innovating designs. There’ve already been some general suggestions emerge from the community and from suppliers but the discussions can now get onto the specifics. “We had a relatively short timeframe to get this application in to the Ministry of Health earlier this year but that was managed thanks to local public health officials and the members of the Awatere Water Users Group working with council staff and ward councillors. The Seddon community provided plenty of debate along the way but also supported the approach eventually reached. It’s very exciting to see what a great result we’ve been able to achieve together.” Councillor for Renwick Cynthia Brooks was also instrumental in

Upgrade coming for railway crossing The railway crossing on State Highway 1/Main Street is set to become safer for pedestrians, with work to begin shortly on a $30,000 upgrade. Marlborough Roads is set to begin upgrading the Main Street pedestrian rail crossing facilities on the southern and northern side of the roundabout to make it safer for pedestrians to cross the rail line. Work is expected to begin later this month. Marlborough Roads Manager Frank Porter says the work will include ‘Look for trains’ signage, improvements to the surface of the level crossing, and vegetation

Big picture for Picton A raft of ‘big picture’ ideas for Picton will take centre stage at a public meeting on September 2 at Endeavour Park Pavilion, aiming to develop the strongest possible future for the town and its environment. The ideas up for discussion include a wish-list of amenities, unique activities to encourage visitors as well as more permanent residents and businesses, plus better infrastructure like water, signage and land use, and initiatives focused on the natural environment and history of the area. Organised by Picton Smart and Connected, the ‘Big Picture’ ideas arose from the voluntary steering group’s recently approved strategic plan and input from various sectors of the community via several PS&C working groups.

Chairman Barry Maister says the working groups have been hugely busy with ongoing practical issues and advocacy in the first six months of Picton Smart and Connected, but it’s important to look ahead to pursue ideas that will ensure the community thrives in the long term.
“Some may be very broad picture, like a maritime or eco centre, pest free Picton, or ensuring sustainable water supply. Others may be quite specific like getting wifi through the CBD, better signage, a wine centre for Picton, a steam train to Blenheim, even a sandy beach or that long-debated idea for a swimming pool,” he says. The steering group will also clarify its role in the community, and summarise its first six months of activity and advocacy. Barry hopes for a good turnout from the Picton public, to hear and discuss the progress of the voluntary organisation and its network of working groups since its formation early this year. “Facilitator Colin Bass of BusinessLab recently led us on a review of our first six months, and although we knew

a lot of work has been done on a voluntary basis, we were surprised by just how much had been achieved already,” he says. The meeting will clarify how the group was formed, the makeup of the working groups, the way they connect with other community organisations and individuals, and the focus on ensuring better advocacy for the Picton community with key stakeholders including the Marlborough District Council. Picton Smart & Connected will also present its recently finalised Strategic Plan and vision for Picton. Anyone is welcome to attend the public meeting, 7-9pm on Wednesday September 2. New initiative for young people launched A new initiative designed to encourage young people to retain their interest in learning and further education is being launched in Blenheim by the Minister for Whanau Ora, Te Ururoa Flavell. Developed by local Maori social service provider, Maataa Waka ki te Tau Ihu, Tiramarama Mai is designed to support rangatahi to reach their potential through staying in education with a key theme being to strengthen their connections. Popular artists exhibit in Havelock Two very popular local artists, Tony Matthews and Lindsay Jefferis, are featured together in an exhibition of local talent at the Gallery Havelock, opening tomorrow. “It’s a bit of a relief really, both have gathered a lot of fans with their works who have been eagerly awaiting this event,” says gallery director Brett Avison. “In fact, we have a great deal of trouble keeping Tony’s work, in particular, in the gallery – it just keeps selling!” Brett is referring to Tony Matthews, whose mixed media sculptures feature a unique blend of recycled metal and local seashells, in an attractive, delicate and contemporary blend that has to be seen to be believed. “We’ve had people tell us they’re collecting his work, and one of the pieces in the exhibition has already been sold, even before we open the doors. “Those who enjoyed our recent exhibition, of works by Colin Wyn and Lionel Jefcoate, will find a similar level of interest in the works on show.” Tony has quickly established a reputation for his distinctive artwork after moving to Havelock almost two years ago, and in that

time his contribution to the development of Havelock, and the gallery, has been significant. A keen yachtsman, he and his wife Liz literally sailed into Havelock and bought their house at the end of the road up from the marina. In addition, sculptures and paintings by Lindsay Jefferis, whose distinctive, realistic painting style has fooled many into thinking his works are photographs, will also be on display, with people from as far afield as Nelson and Christchurch leaving word at the gallery expressing their interest in any exhibition of his work. Lindsay also sculpts, and his smooth, sophisticated sandstone works are also in high demand, with his initial exhibits having been sold. A man of many interests and talents, Lindsay’s prints are in hot demand, as are his original works, and if you’ve been to the Marlborough airshow, you’ll have seen some of his amazing set building skills on show. The exhibition opens at a public showing at 6.30 pm, and runs for two weeks, finishing on September 3, with the Gallery open seven days from 10am to 4pm.

one on one with the Sun
The one who listens Lifeline Marlborough branch manager Vienna Cassidy stumbled into counselling “by accident” and says she has loved it ever since. She sat down with Sun reporter Jacob Page to discuss the challenges faced by those with depression and the challenges in changing stereotypes and making a difference during her nine years with the over-the-phone counselling service. Vienna Cassidy admits had it not been for a friend “dragging” her to a counselling course, her life would be completely different. “She asked me to go to this course, I’d come out of a bad marriage, I was doing three jobs and working in the vineyards which I loved and then I did this course called ‘A Certificate in Counselling’. “By the end of the year I’d finished as top of my class and I felt I was really good at it and it was something I wanted to do. “It took me five or six years while studying part time, working part time and raising a family to achieve it. “I came from the other side of the tracks and have a back story like everyone does but I think anyone can do whatever they want.” Vienna started at Lifeline to improve her listening skills almost a decade ago and never looked back. “I started as a volunteer when I was training to be a counsellor in 2006 then I was employed as the clinical manager and with the merge of the centres I applied for the branch manager role and have been doing that for a year.”
“I still enjoy the telephone work; I have to be in the right frame of mind to do it otherwise I might be a bit sharp. “I do face-to-face work and telephone work and I enjoy telephone work most of all. “I feel you get to know more about a person over the phone because they’re more willing to tell you more than what they would feel comfortable sharing face-to-face. “You see more of a shadow of who they are and you can pick up a lot from the tone and the way they tell you things.” Vienna has a family history of depression and some key moments helped her decide she wanted to work towards getting involved in mental health despite trying to juggle raising a family at the same time. She says being able to see improvements in the people who call for help is the best feeling. “There is such a stigma around people with mental illness. “I feel people think that if you have a mental illness that you are dangerous but it’s an illness like a physical injury. “Depression is the second leading illness in the world and will become number one
(in time).” Vienna says the more people openly talk about their issues, the better. “Bottling everything up is what pushes people towards suicide…Their thinking becomes distorted and they don’t realise it. “People that go through relationships are at high risk especially if alcohol and drugs are also mixed in. “Youth are at risk because they are impulsive and the elderly can find things isolating or they lose a partner or have to be put in a rest home and they can be of a staunch generation... “The self-satisfaction of making a difference, even if it’s a small difference is so rewarding. “Even in just 20 minutes you can work
through things and notice a real lift in the voice on the other end of the phone and that’s great.” Vienna would like to think depression is beatable. “You have to live holistically, exercise, eat cleanly and do things for you. “Environmental factors play a big role in how we feel and yes, there is sometimes a need for medication but medication is only part of the picture. “You have to be the one to make the changes.” Lifeline Marlborough is always looking for volunteers and you can contact them on 03 578 7503 to get involved. Wine exports see change in destination America has overtaken Australia to become New Zealand wine’s largest export market by value according to the 2015 Annual Report of New Zealand Winegrowers. Now valued at $372 million, up 13 per cent, the US market accounted for around one quarter of wine exports in June year end 2015. Significant potential for further growth in North America and other markets is cited in the report,
as the wine industry advances towards its goal of $2 billion of exports in 2020. “We expect further growth in export value in the year ahead, but volume growth will be constrained due to the smaller 2015 harvest” says chair of New Zealand Winegrowers Steve Green. Steve highlighted that in order to achieve continuing value growth, New Zealand wine must maintain focus on enhancing its reputation
as a distinctive, quality product. “Our premium reputation remains the greatest collective asset for New Zealand wine, and underlies the high average price our wine commands in global trade”. New Zealand wine exports reached a new record of $1.42 billion in June year end 2015, up seven per cent on 2014. Wine is now New Zealand’s sixth largest export good by value.
Stretch brings his rich voice to Picton and Blenheim over the next couple of days.
Stretching out Alt-country singer-songwriter ‘Stretch’ is hauling his acoustic guitar, harmonicas and kickdrum through the South Island for a tour of shows. Following up a run of spirited gigs, Stretch now chases the sound down for ‘The Southern Kicks Tour.’ Stretch starts his tour at Le Café in Picton tomorrow night, and continues at The Yard Bar in Blenheim on Friday night before heading over to Nelson. Stretch will be rolling out a boat-stomping backbeat and weaving his soulful voice through it all with songs that could be classics from your own lost mix-
tape and taking you through the magic and artists that inspire his songwriting. Spanning dark-hearted ballads to roof-raising choruses, these shows are a trip for both performer and audience. It began with an upbringing in rural New Zealand, listening to 45s on a jukebox at the pub he was too young to be in. Onto years of roads less-travelled, Stretch has been on a life-long search to find out where he belongs. 2015 has seen him lighting up venues from coast-to-coast and earning the kind of rave reviews his live performance justifies.

EDUCATION Engineering tutor wants to see more women in trade New Whitireia electrical engineering tutor Mary Graham hopes to see plenty of young women coming through the programme. Mary, who joined the Whitireia Trades and Services faculty recently, says women need to be more confident in their ability to foot it in male-dominated industries like electrical engineering. After realising that she preferred the idea of hands-on learning to sitting in a classroom or lecture theatre, Mary applied for an electrician apprenticeship with Napier City Council in her sixth form year. She quickly gained her qualification and has since worked in a range of roles across the industry. Mary says she did come up against sexist attitudes in the early stages of her career, but notes that these have become the minority in recent years. “While there are probably still a few around with those outdated ideas, across the board in trades it’s now more about whether or not you’re prepared to get stuck in, rather than if you’re male or female.” However, the joy she experienced in seeing apprentices come through the ranks and her growing desire to give back to the community convinced her to take up the position

Mary points out that now is a great time for both women and men to be getting into the industry, with electrical engineers in demand across industrial, commercial and residential developments. She adds that the trade offers good salaries, incredible variety and flexibility, and is one you can take anywhere in the world. She says the Whitireia Certificate in
Electrical Engineering provides an excellent stepping stone into the industry, and that enrolments for the programme are currently open. Maori and Pasifika Trades Training Scholarships are also available for those eligible. “Enrol now and you’ll be starting on a path towards a truly rewarding career.” Mary says.

Blenheim swimmer Sally McMath added a silver medal to her two personal bests from the New Zealand Short Course Swimming Championships in Auckland last week. McMath, 17, actually finished fourth in the 100 metres butterfly, but was awarded second because Sophie Taylor and Brooke Mindham, who finished second and third respectively, are both Australians and were ineligible for medals. McMath swam Friday’s final in one minute and four seconds, about two seconds slower than winner Emily Rennell. The medal came after McMath swum two personal bests, in the 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke, earlier in the meet. The meet began on Tuesday and finished on Saturday. McMath, the sole Blenheim Swimming Club member competing, swam in eight events in the women’s 17-18 year-old age group.
Indoor bowls The Marlborough representative Indoor Bowls team stunned their arch rivals Nelson to win the Lillias Fairhall Trophy for ‘fours’ supremacy. Marlborough also won the Cassia Warnes Trophy as the B team also downed Nelson at Simcox Stadium. Marlborough ‘A’ defeated Nelson by 27 game points to 23, while the ‘B’ side clearly won 29-21. Marlborough last won the Cassia Warnes Trophy in 2010 while it is 2008 since Marlborough last won the Lillias Fairhall.

By Adam Poulopoulos Six dancers from the Star Dance Academy excelled at the recent Salsa Solo event, collecting eight trophies. The academy, based at Grovetown, sent six dancers aged 12-16 to the national event in Christchurch earlier this month. In the process all six qualified for the World Salsa Solo in Brisbane in November. Sophia Bendell, 14 and Zarryn Boyce, 14, took out first and second in the youth salsa solo, with Tiarna Nukunuku, 12, winning the youth Latin solo edition. Kristina Gibbs, 14 and Hannah Braddock, 15, combined to win the youth salsa duet, with Zarryn and Tiana placed third. Sophia teamed up with Lucy Bendell, 13, to take out the youth Latin duet.
The Star Suave team won the youth salsa teams event, with Star Fuego Reggaeton top in the youth Latin teams division. Academy director Vicki Bendell says she is proud of their efforts. “It’s high up there. To qualify for the world event is great. “They’ve done lots of training and hard work, and put in lots of time and effort to get those results.” She says the academy helps kids become more than just good dancers. “It helps kids to build confidence, character and teamwork.”

Runners progress to Marlborough champs Crowds gathered at the Queen Charlotte College forest on Friday for the annual Waitohi Cross Country, with the top Year 5 and 6 runners going on to the Marlborough Cross Country Championships held yesterday. The Year 6 girls’ race was won by Kayla Bishell from Picton School followed by Mekah Lawrence, also from Picton School. Brayden Allen from Picton School won the Year 6 boys’ race with Hunter Bendell from Waikawa Bay finishing just behind him.

Gill makes harness racing finals By Adam Poulopoulos Blenheim woman Kendra Gill has finished fourth in the Harness Racing New Zealand Cadet of the Year finals. Gill finished one point off third place in the six-person national finals, with the results announced at the HRNZ awards dinner on August 8. She says she was delighted to become the first person from Blenheim to reach the national final. “It means a lot. There have been two other people from Nelson to do it in the past. “It’s great to finally prove I’m as smart as people who work full-time in big stables. “To come from a small stable is quite pleasing.” To make the national final Gill had to come through the qualifying process. She came through the regional event, which included sections on identifying horse feeds, horse gear, horse health and general knowledge. The regional event is compulsory for all under HRNZ’s cadet scheme. “I was quite surprised to make it to the finals,” Gill says.
On July 22 the national final took place in Christchurch. As well as equinerelated activities she also completed tasks like ice skating, CrossFit circuits, driving diggers and changing tyres. “They make up the challenges. They thought they’d throw them in for a bit of fun,” Gill says. “Most people who were in the finals last year had a heads-up and knew what was happening. “My favourite was the ice skating even though it was the most painful – it was my first time doing it and I kept falling over. “They didn’t count for much though – it was more the horse side.” Gill, driving her horse Dusty, had her first harness racing podium finish in Reefton in March. She says she has always been interested in horses. “My grandfather trained horses before I could walk. We’ve always been a horsey family. “I do quite a bit of horse riding and horse racing.” She works part-time at Mainfreight as well as in the stables.

This weekend there will be no Marlborough Harriers pack run, as the Seddon School Tussock Run is being held on Sunday. The event features five kilometre, 10km and 15km events. Other upcoming events include the Queen Charlotte Relay on September 19 and the Molesworth Run on November 21.

Turner to try to appeal ban By Jacob Page Marlborough Development football coach Dave Turner says he will appeal a decision by Mainland Football to issue him with a four week ban. Turner was given a red card two weekends ago in Nelson and had since been given a four week ban for abusing the referee. Turner, who handed in his resignation to Marlborough Football which will take effect at the end of the season, says he was surprised to find out the length of the ban. Turner says he always intended to step aside at the end of the season to spend more time with his family but this was
